Hello everyone.

Please mark your calendars.

The next NIF Webinar will be held on  Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 11:00 am PDT.   Please join Dr. Russell Poldrack as he discusses Cognitive Atlas.

The following is a description of the Webinar:

Please join us for a talk by Dr. Russell Poldrack, about the Cognitive Atlas, which is a collaborative knowledge building project that aims to develop a knowledge base (or ontology) that characterizes the state of current thought in cognitive science. Harmonization of this terminology with CogPO will be a portion of this discussion. Dr. Poldrack also runs the open fMRI data center and will discuss how terminology in the Cognitive Atlas impacts the data collection at open fMRI.

Russell Poldrack is a Professor of Psychology and Neurobiology at the University of Texas at Austin and the Cognitive Atlas is a collaboration with the UCLA Center for Computational Biology (A. Toga, PI) and UCLA Consortium for Neuropsychiatric Phenomics (R. Bilder, PI). It is supported by grant RO1MH082795 from the National Institute of Mental Health.

NIF Webinar – May 1, 2012 at 11:00 am PDT

Posted on April 26th, 2012 in General information, News & Events, Uncategorized, Webinar Announcement | No Comments »

Hello everyone.

Please mark your calendars.

The next NIF Webinar will be held on  Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 11:00 am PDT.   Please join Drs. Angie Laird & Jessica Turner as they discuss the Mind Research Network and BrainMap projects.

The following is a description of the webinar:

Drs. Turner and Laird will discuss a cooperative project between the Mind Research Network and BrainMap projects to consistently gather and annotate fMRI data. Both projects represent cognitive processes using the CogPO ontology, a community standard for representing cognitive paradigms. CogPO is used because while the experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience literature may refer to certain behavioral paradigms by name (eg. the Stroop paradigm or the Sternberg paradigm) or by function (a working memory task, a visual attention task), these paradigms can vary tremendously in the stimuli that are presented to the subject, the response expected from the subject, and the instructions given to the subject. Disentangling the various paradigms into their components may help to disentangle the complex data from fMRI experiments.

Background on BrainMap:
The BrainMap Project is developed at the Research Imaging Institute of the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. BrainMap was conceived in 1988 and originally developed as a web-based interface. After more than 20 years of development, BrainMap has evolved into a much broader project whose software and data have been utilized in numerous publications. BrainMap provides not only data for meta-analyses and data mining, but also distributes software and concepts for quantitative integration of neuroimaging data. NIF Webinar – April 24, 2012 at 11:00 AM PDT

Hello everyone.

Please mark your calendars.

The next NIF Webinar will be held on  Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 11:00 am PDT.   Please join Janna Hastings as she discusses Mental Functioning Ontology.

The following is a description of the webinar:

The Mental Functioning Ontology is an overarching modular ontology covering all aspects of mental functioning, including mental processes such as cognition and traits such as intelligence.  It provides a grounding in an upper level ontology and a framework within which mental functioning can be related to other levels of description within other ontologies, such as anatomy and biochemistry. Modules which are currently actively under development are those for cognition and emotion, and separately, related diseases and affective disorders. MFO is being developed in the context of the Ontology for General Medical Science and the Basic Formal Ontology, and is currently a collaboration between the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and the University at Buffalo, USA, although the collaborative development model is expected to extend to further partners in the future. The project is being developed with full involvement of all relevant communities, following best practices laid out by the OBO Foundry.

NIF Webinar – April 17, 2012 at 11:00 PDT

Posted on April 16th, 2012 in General information, Inside NIF, News & Events, Uncategorized | No Comments »

Hello everyone,

Please mark your calendars.

The next NIF Webinar will be held on  Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 11:00 am PDT.   Please join Dr. Gwen Frishkoff as she discusses Harmonizing the Representation of Cognitive Processes.

The following is a description of the webinar:

Dr. Frishkoff will discuss harmonization of NEMO, a formal ontology for studies of human electrophysiology, and cogPO, an ontology of cognitive neuroscience protocols (experiment design) that is based on BrainMap. The goal of  integrating NEMO and cogPO is to create a framework to support valid mappings from brain to mental functioning. Mental functions are inferred from measurements of brain and behavioral data within specific experiment contexts. Thus, in order to create an ontology for mental functioning that is evidence-based, it will be important to consider the logical and empirical bases for these inferences. We will discuss some insights that could be gained by representing brain data within a formal ontology that also captures the experimental context for these measures in a fine-grained, analytic way.

Date and Time: Tuesday, April 17, 2012 • 11:00-12:00 PDT
